Drivers who speed on the D1 sections that are currently being repaired will have to face a section speed measurement system between exits 49 Psáře and 56 Soutice. This traffic safety measure shall ensure a smoother traffic flow, less accidents and dangerous situations. Detection cameras proved their function last year near Brno where the accident rate in the section measured dropped following their installation. About 150,000 drivers received the request to pay a fine of CZK 1000 (euro 35), i.e. only three percent of the vehicles passing the construction site.

"The majority of drivers do not take any risks and they keep the permitted speed of 80 km/h when safely passing through the motorway construction site. But we must, together with the police and competent municipalities that deal with the traffic offences, target and calm down these few speeding drivers who cause tragic accidents and traffic complications," says Dan Ťok, the minister of transport.

Starting from April, an automatic camera detection system starts operation on the sixth D1 section between Psáře and Soutice being modernised. The cameras read the licence plate of all passing vehicles and calculate their average speed. The system automatically transmits the data to the police for processing. The police sends suspected traffic offences to the so-called competent municipalities with an extended scope of powers – to Vlašim in this case.

"Accidents that happen in the narrow sections of construction sites are mostly caused by drivers who do not manage their speed well, crash into the temporary crash barriers and block traffic in the section even for several hours. The section speed measurement system was well proved last year, which is why we will use it again this year," says Tomáš Lerch, the traffic police director.

Speed shall be measured also by Jihlava, Velké Meziříčí and Humpolec on the D1

The use of more detection cameras now depends on when the tender for the measurement sets, which ŘSD organised, will be closed. Once this public procurement has been closed, cameras may be deployed on four more motorway sections during the year. The section measurement system may appear on the fourth construction site on the D1 between Ostředek and Šternov, on the 10th construction site between exits Hořice and Koberovice, on the 15th construction site by the exit to Jihlava  and Velký Beranov and on the 18th construction site between Měřín and Velké Meziříčí, west.

Building works on the modernisation of the D1 motorway between Prague and Brno are currently under way on seven sections simultaneously. Traffic is guided through four lanes, two in each direction, on all these construction sites. Only when the traffic signs need to be adjusted, vehicles must use only one lane in each direction. ŘSD and the building contractors do their best to reduce this time to the essential minimum. For instance in section 10 between Hořice and Koberovice, horizontal traffic signs were installed at the weekend at night, so drivers were affected to the smallest possible extent.

This year, 50% of the D1 motorway rebuilding project will be completed and the motorway will be completely fixed by 2020. "I want to thank all drivers for their patience when travelling across the country. This year, we build and repair hundreds of kilometres of motorways and category I roads. We need to pay the debt from the past when nothing was repaired, nothing was built and no new projects were started. We changed this and in three years our road network will count hundreds of kilometres of new motorways and motorways will be fixed and more up-to-date, so they will primarily be safer," Dan Ťok, the minister of transport, adds.
