The Transport Ministry will propose to the Government the implementation of electronic highway vignettes. The aim is to increase a comfort of drivers who would be newly able to pay a time charge using a mobile application too. According to the material of the Ministry, so-called video tolling could start operating in 2019.

The suggested system envisages the use of a video detection of license plates of vehicles passing through and will be independent of the existing toll gates. "We propose to only change a charging technology that will be comfortable for a driver. Payments will be possible via the internet and mobile apps, and the driver will not have to stick any label on his car. This step will save on the printing and distribution of existing vignettes. The highway fee, according to our proposal, should remain at the same level,“ said Transport Minister Dan Tok.
The implementation of electronic highway vignettes in the system of time charging will bring reliable and continuous time-based charging. So-called video tolling has been implemented in Slovakia this year, it currently operates in Hungary too. In future, it will enable purchasing via the internet or mobile apps which in turn will generate savings on printing and distributing vignettes. Currently, an online purchase of a vignette is possible but still requires a physical receiving of the vignette.
The implementation date for a new method of payments and time fee checks is expected to be January 2019 at the earliest while the actual term depends primarily on the course of discussing legislative changes and the outcome of the tender procedure. The Ministry of Transport will inform the government of these plans before the end of May.
