The section speed control system has been guarding safety in the narrowed sections on the D1 already for the third year. The first section monitored by cameras this year is the construction site between Velké Meziříčí and Lhotka. The modernised section of the motorway by Ostředek and Šternov will follow, the section between Hořice and Koberovice will be the third location and a motorway section close to Jihlava will be the fourth location. More than one percent of drivers committed an offence last year, but the crushing majority of drivers respect the speed and drive safely.

The section speed control system is again watching reckless speeding drivers on the D1 motorway

"The majority of drivers do not take any risks and they keep the permitted speed of 80 km/h when safely passing through the motorway construction site. But we must, together with the police and competent municipalities that deal with the traffic offences, target and calm down these few speeding drivers who cause tragic accidents and traffic complications," says Dan Ťok, the minister of transport.

Speed measurements started on a D1 section between Velké Meziříčí (EXIT 146) and Lhotka (EXIT 153). More sections will receive the automatic detection camera system this year, e.g. between Ostředek (EXIT 34) and Šternov (EXIT 41) plus a six-km section between Hořice (EXIT 75) and Koberovice (EXIT 81). Speed measurements will also start between Jihlava (EXIT 112) and Velký Beranov (EXIT 119) depending on when the city of Jihlava purchases the detection cameras.

"Accidents that happen in the narrow sections of construction sites are mostly caused by drivers who do not manage their speed well, crash into the temporary crash barriers and block traffic in the section even for several hours. The section speed measurement system has proven well during the last two years, which is why we will use it again this year," says Tomáš Lerch, the traffic police director.

The section measurement system brought smoother and safer traffic on the modernised D1 motorway already last year. In the section Psáře – Soutice only 1.2% of drivers were speeding last year. Due to the high traffic intensity, the police recorded almost 50 000 offences.

Collaborating with the Road and Motorways Directorate (ŘSD), BESIP prepared a series of training videos how to correctly drive through the sections with restrictions. You can watch all these videos on facebook of the Ministry of Transport or on the YouTube channel of BESIP.

Building works on the modernisation of the D1 motorway between Prague and Brno are currently under way on five sections simultaneously. Traffic is guided through four lanes, two in each direction, on all these construction sites. You can find current information on where more modernisation works on the D1 will start at www.novaD1.cz. To see the list of major repairs and restrictions, check www.dopravniinfo.cz or call the ŘSD free hotline 800 280 281. The current construction sites can be found at www.mdcr.cz/mapa.
