Works in the sphere of the conceptual development of Czech waterways which are significant for transportation, and of how they tie in to the waterways of the neighbouring countries.
 
Within the scope of its responsibilities, it ensures the territorial protection of the routes of existing waterways that are significant for transportation, with the prescribed technical parameters, and of the planned routes based on the European Treaty on Inland Water Ways of an International Significance.
 
Participates in the tendering and evaluation of programmes of the rationalisation projects and services; research and development; and in designing and standardisation.
 
Furthermore, it ensures the preparation and implementation of investment programmes, with the financial participation of the state and the Transport Infrastructure Fund; methodologically manages the work of the budget-financed organisation, The Directorate for Waterways; and checks the implementation of investment programmes having to do with the development of waterways and ports.
