• Existing DLs that were issued between 1 July 1964 and 30 April 2004 continue to be valid in all European Union member states.

• DLs that were issued before 1 July 1964 are no longer valid, and their exchange was possible, according to the law, only until the end of 2002.  Now, a new application form for the EC-model DL must be filed.  In such cases, the appropriate authority has the option of sanctioning the applicant pursuant to the Act no. 200/1990 Coll., the Offence Act, as amended, in the form of a fine.

• The process of the exchange of a valid DL for an EC-model DL (after 1 May 2005) is as follows:
1. At the appropriate office of a municipal authority of a municipality with delegated powers, or at the town hall of a city in the Czech Republic, the applicant fills out an application form (new form) and attaches one colour ID, document-type photograph (35x45 mm).
2. The period for collecting the new DL is usually up to 15-20 days.
3. When the new DL is issued, the original DL is invalidated and the applicant confirms the issuance of the new DL by signing the front page of his/her application form.
4. No administrative fee is charged for the exchange.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The validity of DLs issued between 1 January 2001 and 30 April 2004 is not limited by law, and consequently, application forms for their exchange for new DLs cannot be filed until the amendment to the Act becomes effective!!!

• The legal process for the processing of an application is regulated by:
Act no. 361/2000 Coll., On Road Traffic and on Changing Certain Acts, as amended, and  by Regulation no. 31/2001 Coll., On Driving Licences and the Driver Registry, as amended (Regulation no. 177/2004 Coll.)
