Nearly two months after launching the sale, one million of e-vignettes was sold, mainly with a one year validity. Drivers mostly bought e-vignettes online at eDalnice.cz (846,344 pc), but some were also purchased at post offices (103,396 pc) and petrol stations EuroOil (87,067 pc). From 1 January, drivers can also use self-service kiosks to buy the e-vignette. This was the case of 3,281 pieces sold.

One of the biggest advantages of the new e-vignette is its rolling validity. “Compared to the old one-year vignettes, new ones are not valid for a calendar year, but for 365 days. Drivers can set the validity of their e-vignette themselves. There is no need to purchase it by 1 February, if they wish to drive out to the motorway later in the year”, pointed out Martin Opatrný, spokesperson of CENDIS, which is responsible for e-vignettes.

Nevertheless, it is recommended to buy the vignette at least a couple of days ahead, so changes could be made. If drivers make a mistake during the purchase (especially when filling out the licence plate number), it is possible to correct it later. When buying the vignette at a post office or a petrol station EuroOil, they must check the details immediately on the spot, because changes can be made only within 15 minutes after the purchase.

Another frequent mistake is filling out a wrong e-mail address. This detail is also crucial, because after the purchase is completed, drivers will receive a payment confirmation with an authorisation code to this e-mail address. Drivers need to know the authorisation code to sign in to their account at eDalnice.cz to manage their vignette and for example correct the licence plate number or postpone the beginning of the validity. However, this is possible only if the e-vignette has a rolling validity.

“The rules might seem strict. However, they are set in a way to prevent misuse. Somebody would buy the vignette in the morning, use it for driving on a motorway during the day and in the evening request a cancellation of the payment. It is of course understandable that people make mistakes due to lack of attention. Nonetheless, it is almost impossible to tell a difference between an actual mistake and an attempt to abuse the system”, explained Mr Opatrný.

Every vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes with at least four wheels must have an e-vignette. Drivers do not have to purchase the e-vignette for trailers and motorcycles. However, driver must buy the e-vignette for a quad bike, although it is classified as a motorcycle.

Already 1,040,088 e-vignettes in a total amount of CZK 1.5 billion has been sold since 1 December 2020.
