Increased number of electric and gas powered vehicles in 2020
19/3/2021Press releases

By the end of 2020, more than 8 million motor vehicles were registered in the Czech Central Register of Vehicles (CRV), out of which 75% accounted for passenger cars (M1 category). Although diesel or petrol fuel cars prevail, thanks to the current trends and state aid electric vehicles are on the rise (ca. 10,000), accompanying the predominant gas powered cars (over 126,000) in the alternative fuels category. We noticed a large increase in registration of electric passenger cars after the market with conventional vehicles decreased last year.

“In cooperation with the Transport Research Centre (CDV), we regularly publish data on vehicles monitored under the National Action Plan for Clean Mobility. Gas powered vehicles are, and for some time will be, prevailing in the most closely observed category (M1). We register over 105,000 LPG vehicles and more than 21,000 CNG vehicles. We also registered nearly 10,000 electric passenger cars with external charging, out of which 7,109 accounted for battery electric vehicles (increase by 90%, BEV). Although gas powered cars prevail, last year’s data from the Czech Republic and EU show that the trend will gradually shift towards electric vehicles. For example, last year the share of registered gas powered and electric passenger cars was 3.85%, out of which 2.58% accounted for electric cars”, said Mr Jan Bezděkovský, who is responsible for clean mobility agenda at the Ministry of Transport.

*newly registered vehicles according to data from Car Importers Association (SDA), an actual number of PHEV can be slightly higher – for example imports, some registration authorities place some LPG vehicles from CRV under petrol/diesel fuel category (especially older vehicles)

By the end of last year, a total of 6.13 million passenger cars were registered in the Czech Republic. The overall sale of new vehicles decreased annually by 19%. The sale of electric cars on the other hand increased by 331% and of plug-in hybrids by 318%.

Updated detailed analyses published on the Ministry’s website show:

•    An increase in the number of L-category vehicles with external charging (for example motorcycles) – 1,584 registered last year (an annual increase by 41%);
•    That concerning production brand, the most frequently registered battery electric cars in category M1 belonged to ŠKODA (1,654 pc, 23%), in category N to ALKÉ (125 pc, 27%) and in category L to HECHT (972 pc, 19%).

About CIVINET project

CIVINET network, in cooperation with CDV, publishes information and current analyses of car fleet and infrastructure helping to monitor the development of clean mobility in the Czech Republic as well as the EU. The information is provided for the EU, detailed information then for the Czech Republic.

“With the help from the Ministry of Transport, we will regularly update the data. We have currently prepared an interactive design showing registration of new passenger cars in the EU, during the year we will prepare the same scheme for the Czech Republic. As for the EU registrations, users can apply filters (year, type of fuel and country) to simulate data as needed. We also plan to incorporate other features from the analysis to this format so that the data are available not only to experts, but also to public. We want to have compound data about vehicles as well as charging and fuel infrastructure in one place”, adds Mr Lukáš Kadula, a long-term clean mobility projects expert in CDV.
