“We continue to work on a cross-border tunnel between Dresden and Ústí nad Labem. The aim is to shorten the travel time between Prague and Dresden to an hour but also to connect Berlin with Prague and Vienna under the Via Vindobona project”, said the Minister of Transport Karel Havlíček.

The Czech-Saxony national experts from both ministries are active in a European group for territorial cooperation “New railway line Dresden-Prague”. The delegations marked the fifth anniversary of its establishment with the president of Ústecký region, Jan Schiller, and the first deputy of the councillor of Saxon Switzerland – Eastern Ore Mountains district.

The Via Vindobona project will make passenger transport between Prague and Dresden faster while at the same time connect citizens of Brno or Vienna. The Czech delegation asked Saxony for support in the review of the TEN-T network and incorporation of corridor Prague – Brno and Ústí nad Labem – Heidenau into the main part of this network. Mr Havlíček also informed his Saxon counterpart about a meeting with the federal minister Andreas Scheuer and signing of an international agreement on navigability of the Elbe River.

Both ministers also signed a memorandum on sharing of transport data, digitalisation of transport and autonomous mobility. “Our neighbour Saxony is an excellent partner in terms of smart and sustainable transport projects. Ústecký region will benefit from special investments into modern technologies and the neighbouring region can serve as an inspiration”, said the Minister of Transport Karel Havlíček.

An interesting topic for the Czech Republic is also a cooperation concerning hydrogen and its use. The deputy prime minister pointed out the Czech interest in the development of hydrogen technologies and along with the president of Ústecký region invited the Saxon partner to a Business Forum, which will take place on 23 and 24 September 2021 and will focus on the hydrogen economy.
