It is possible to exchange the driving license free of charge at any municipality with extended competence, as soon as three months before the document expires. A list of all offices is available in an interactive map of the Ministry of Transport. A valid identity document and an existing driving license are required for replacement. When submitting the application, the applicant no longer submits a paper photograph; officials take a digital photograph on site or download the current photograph from the population register. If the driver requests the document to be replaced within 5 days, it will cost him/her CZK 700.

If people drive with an expired driving license, they risk a fine of up to CZK 2,000 on the spot, and up to CZK 2,500 in case of administrative proceedings.

The most busy regions include the Central Bohemian Region, the South Moravian Region and the Prague Region. Citizens can be informed about the expiration of the document through the Citizen Portal. You can find up-to-date statistics on exchange of driving licenses on our website.

Note to the driving licenses which have not been exchanged last year. Theoretically, these licenses still need to be replaced, but experience from previous years shows that some drivers exchange their license only when it expires or do not apply for a new license at all.
