Taking a road vehicle out of service

In this situation the owner of a road vehicle does not want to use the vehicle any more in road traffic or a new insurance policy on vehicle liability insurance for the same road vehicle has not been concluded within 14 days of the expiry of the vehicle liability insurance.

The vehicle is also taken out of service if it has been stolen.

The person entitled to act is generally a natural or legal person registered in the Vehicle Registry as the owner of the vehicle. The owner of the vehicle may also authorise another person in writing.

Who to turn to?

You can contact any municipal office of a municipality with extended jurisdiction: there are 206 such offices in the Czech Republic and you can search and find them on the map below.

  • original proof of identity (ID card, passport)
  • original or legally verified copy of the trade licence or extract from the commercial registry (for company vehicles)

  • in the case of a stolen vehicle: the certificate of theft issued by the police (in this case, not all documents need to be submitted, only the existing ones)
  • submit the vehicle registration certificate and licence plates
No proof of vehicle insurance is required.

Obligations of the owner

The owner of the road vehicle which has been decommissioned must:
  • secure the vehicle in such a way that it does not endanger or damage the environment
  • not remove essential parts of the road vehicle taken out of service, in particular the body bearing the road vehicle identification number and the engine
  • If the decommissioning of a road vehicle lasts for more than 12 consecutive calendar months, the owner of the road vehicle decommissioned shall, without undue delay after the expiry of that period, notify the municipal authority of the municipality with extended competence of the address where the decommissioned road vehicle is located and the function of this place.
The provisions of section 12(8) of Act No 56/2001 Coll. on the conditions of operation of vehicles on roads, as amended on 1 March 2023, allow the owner of a road vehicle that has been taken out of service to apply, before the expiry of the 3-year period, for the retention of the licence plate number, i.e. the licence plates and the vehicle registration certificate. The administrative fee for the retention of the licence plate number, the licence plates and the vehicle registration certificate for a vehicle which has been decommissioned is CZK 200 in accordance with point 26(r) of Act No 634/2004 Coll. on administrative fees, as amended from 1 March 2023.

Termination of vehicle decommissioning

The decommissioning of a road vehicle can be terminated at the request of its owner if the liability insurance obligation for the road vehicle is fulfilled.
