"This gives drivers the opportunity to make themselves familiar with all the important innovations related to the electronic vignette for 2024 and to decide in time when and which vignette they will buy," says Lucie Bartáková, Head of the Financial Resources Management Section of the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure, which is the system administrator. The changes to electronic vignettes are linked to two key dates: 1 January and 1 March 2024.

From January 2024 it will be possible to purchase all types of available vignettes 30 days in advance of the chosen validity date, compared to the current 90 days. "The three-month delayed validity made sense especially in the first year of operation, when many people wanted to buy the new electronic vignette well in advance. Currently, the function is not used much anymore, so it has been shortened to 30 days," explains Jan Paroubek, director of the state enterprise CENDIS, which operates the electronic vignette system.

From March 2024 further changes and innovations will be added. The portfolio will be expanded by a one-day electronic vignette for CZK 200. The prices of existing types will be adjusted. Thirty-day vignettes will cost CZK 430, ten-day vignettes will cost CZK 270 and the annual vignette will cost CZK 2,300. The system will be also now linked to the Vehicles Registry, so drivers will be relieved of the administrative burden. If changing the licence plate of a vehicle registered in the Czech Republic, it will not be necessary to submit a Notice of Change of the Licence Plate Number, because it will be done automatically. Thanks to connection with the Vehicles Registry, owners of electric or hydrogen powered vehicles will also no longer be required to submit the exemption notification.

We recommend that you pay particular attention to vehicles with special number plates (beginning with the letters EL), which will no longer be automatically exempt from paying the road toll from March. The value of the CO2 emissions produced by the vehicle will decide. Only vehicles without an internal combustion engine with zero CO2 emissions will qualify for the exemption. Hybrid vehicles with combined emissions of up to 50g of CO2/km, which are still fully exempt, will continue to benefit significantly. They will pay 25% of the price of the chosen vignette type. The price for vehicles powered by natural gas (CNG, LNG) and biomethane will continue to be 50% of the price of the respective vignette, see table below.

Driving without a vignette on a motorway section subject to toll carries a heavy fine up to CZK 5,000 on the spot and up to CZK 20,000 in administrative proceedings. It is therefore in the interest of every driver to check its validity. You can check it simply at edalnice.cz. You only need to enter the licence plate number and the country of registration in the "Validate" section. The system immediately shows you until when the vignette is valid.

Prices of vignettes in the Czech Republic are changing after 12 years. One of the reasons for this is the growing length of the motorway network, with currently 1,365 kilometres. On top of that, a record of 118 new kilometres will be added in 2024.
