The Road and Motorway Directorate has started construction of the continuation of the D3 motorway from Nažidla to the state border with Austria. The 3.5km section will replace the current I/3 road and will largely follow its footprint.

"Last year marked the 20th anniversary of the tragic bus accident near Nažidla in which twenty passengers died. Already then, the motorway was discussed as a priority and the only possible solution to the I/3 road, which is completely inadequate for the current car traffic in many sections. Unfortunately, this was not the last tragedy that took place here. The I/3 road near Nažidla has acquired an unflattering nickname: the road of death. By building two sections of the D3 Kaplice Nádraží – Nažidla and Nažidla – Dolní Dvořiště, we will not only bring the D3 motorway to the Austrian border but also pay off our big safety debt," says Transport Minister Martin Kupka.

The existing I/3 road has an inappropriate alignment, elevation and is simply no longer suitable for current traffic. The new border section also includes three bridges, the Dolní Dvořiště grade-separated crossing and an ecoduct for animal migration.

"The new motorway will substantially increase the safety and flow of traffic, as all transit traffic will be transferred to the new high-capacity four-lane road. As the motorway will still not be completed on the Austrian side for several years, drivers will use a temporary exit from the D3 motorway before the state border for the time being. The last section of the D3 motorway in the South Bohemian Region between Kaplice and Nažidla is also about to be started, its construction will start after the tender for the contractor is completed in the first half of this year," said Radek Mátl, Director General of ŘSD.

A total of 31.9 kilometres of the D3 motorway in South Bohemia are currently under construction, to which the construction of the 12km section Kaplice nádraží – Nažidla will be added in the coming months. The Central Bohemian part of the D3 motorway is also in intensive preparation, with its construction planned for 2027, and work has now begun on the building permit design.

The D3 motorway is part of the E55 Helsingborg – Berlin – Prague – Salzburg – Venice – Calamata international road in its entire length. It is also part of the global TEN-T network of the European Transport Corridor, which connects northern and southern Europe.

The construction is proposed for co-financing from the Cohesion Fund within the Transport Programme 2021-2027 (OPD3).
