Citizens of Ukraine are now obliged to register their vehicle used in the Czech Republic. This follows from the amendment to the Act on the Residence of Foreigners. Vehicle registration is done by the offices of the municipalities with extended competence where the Vehicle Registry is located. Registration is free of charge. Citizens of Ukraine already residing in the Czech Republic can register from 1 October 2023. From 1 January 2024, there will be an obligation to register the car in the database within 7 days of the granting of temporary protection or a visa for the purpose of tolerance. This condition does not apply to vehicles in international traffic.

"We are introducing a central database of Ukrainian vehicles to ensure that the liability of offenders can be traced. This will allow us to pair the vehicle with a specific person who uses it in our territory. This has been very difficult so far because the vehicle registers of the Czech Republic and Ukraine are not linked," says transport minister Martin Kupka, adding: "The whole registry and registration is very simple. We have not created a big bureaucratic juggernaut but a small and efficient system that will not pose a big burden on the state or on those who are obliged to register."

Citizens of Ukraine can register their vehicle at any municipal office of a municipality with extended competencewhere they administer the vehicle register. To register, the applicant must bring a valid ID, the vehicle registration certificate or technical licence and completed operator form where the applicants complete basic information about themselves and their vehicle. If the vehicle registration is not done by the applicant who is to be registered as the operator but by another person, it is necessary to have the power of attorney with a legally certified signature.

Registration of Ukrainian vehicles is free of charge. No administrative fee is due by the applicant, even when recording any changes to the data.

Starting from 1st January 2024, driving a Ukrainian vehicle without operator's registration is an offence subject to a fine of up to CZK 30,000.
