The 10th Prague district will be much easier to reach by trains from 2021. This will be possible thanks to the completion of civil structures worth over CZK 4 billion, the construction of which was officially started today by the RIA. Trains connecting the capital with South Bohemia will now use the high-capacity four-rail track where a new station Prague-Zahradní Město and the Praha-Eden station will be built. The track speed will rise to 120 km/h.

"The railway plays an important role in metropolitan transportation. Its significance will increase further after the completion of this project in with a four-rail track will be built in the area of the former marshalling yard in Vršovice. This project follows up the modernisation of the Prague-Hostivař station and work is also under way on another section of the fourth corridor between Sudoměřice by Tábor and Votice. It will only take a few years and we can go to the south on a continuous, modernised section from Planá nad Lužnicí in the Tábor region to the Vršovice station in Prague," said the minister of transport Dan Ťok.

"The new station in Zahradní Město and the Eden stop, situated close to the Prague Slavia football stadium, will become major hubs where passengers will change for public transportation. The platforms in Zahradní Město will lie directly above the extended underpass in street Průběžná where tram stops will be situated," the RIA CEO Jiří Svoboda lists the benefits. He adds that the existing track via Strašnice will be cancelled and its structure used for other purposes in the future.

The station in Vršovice will undergo a major transformation. A modern platform at a standard height of 550 mm above the rails will significantly improve passenger experience and provide barrier-free access to trains. The residents of Nusle will appreciate the extension of the existing underpass underneath the entire rail area of the station towards street Bartoškova. Access from the platforms to the space in front of the station will be an innovation.

Preparatory works are under way in 2018: mostly the demolition of bridges (in streets V Korytech and U Vršovického hřbitova) and road closures that are mostly scheduled for weekends. The passengers will therefore not face any serious complications yet.

The entire project will entail some shorter operation interruptions. The first continuous three-day closure in the direction to Malešice – Vršovice is scheduled for the first quarter of 2019. Further restrictions will apply during the further stages in station Praha-Vršovice since the spring of 2019 according to the construction schedule of the underpass extension and rails and bridges construction. A three-week closure of the tram line between street Průběžná and Zahradní Město is needed for the demolition of the railway bridge.

The project called "Optimisation of Track Section Prague Hostivař – Praha main railway station Part II – Prague Hostivař – Praha main railways station" is co-funded by the EU from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme. The expected construction costs are CZK 4 419 960 495. The EU support totals 82.14% of eligible costs, so the maximum subsidy is EUR 110 309 931, i.e. about CZK 3 billion. National funding is provided by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure. The companies Metrostav, Swietelsky Rail CZ and SMP CZ are the contractors. The length of the section to be straightened is 6070 m.
